Shipyard History
Established by Paolo Vitelli in 1969, Azimut (part of the Azimut Benetti Group) is one of the biggest yacht builders in the world by sheer numbers of yachts built over the years. From humble beginnings chartering sailboats, Azimut has flourished into a leader in the production of luxury flybridge yachts. In 1985 Azimut acquired Italian shipyard Benetti, heralding a longstanding partnership between the two brands.
Today, Azimut Yachts offers one of the most comprehensive yacht ranges in the world, from small flybridge motor yachts to large fiberglass superyachts. Specializing in the smaller size bracket of luxury yachts the Azimut range stretches from 13m to around the 40m mark. The Azimut brand centers around quality and Azimut-built yachts are known for their effortless beauty and Italian essence.
Crafted to ensure comfort and safety, Azimut's feature classic and elegant designs and draws upon advanced technologies for optimum performance. With established bases around the world, in 2003 Azimut further increased its facilities by opening a new Viareggio plant located in the heart of Viareggio harbor. This 52,000 sqm facility, ideally positioned on the water’s edge, enabled the company to significantly extend its operations. A proven Italian brand, Azimut offers beautiful, high-quality yachts that are enduringly popular.
Shipyard Specialty
Since its founding, Azimut has focused on the production of fiberglass motor yachts. With a large range of models in its portfolio, the yard can cater to clients’ demand for fast and elegant yachts that factor both size and style. Clients can choose between sport, open yachts and large flybridge units, with the option of a tri-deck Azimut yacht being the most recent addition. Most Azimut yachts are built on speculation with shortened delivery times, but still allow clients to select custom options and interior features
The Azimut brand benefits from a worldwide network of official Azimut dealers and attends the major boat shows in the yachting industry.
Notable deliveries and models
The success of Azimut resides in its capacity to renew its range of models in various sizes while maintaining a balance between sporty and timeless designs. The ability to build appealing models make Azimut yachts highly popular on the brokerage market.
One of the first large Azimut flybridge yacht series was the 30m Jumbo 100 launched in the late 90s. It was followed by the Azimut 105 and Azimut 116 in the early 2000s. The yard achieved a certain level of success with its Azimut 98 Leonardo and the Azimut Open series 86S and 120SL. But in 2014, Azimut-Benetti Group undertook a complete change of its Azimut brand by introducing the Azimut Grande range. It was followed by the renewal of the Flybridge, S and the introduction of the Magellano Collections in 2017. The Azimut Grande series offers a choice between flybridge yachts ranging from 27m to 36m. To date, the yard has recorded a high number of deliveries for the Grande 27 Metri, Grande 32 Metri and Grande 35 Metri.
Azimut has never stopped developing new models. Most recently, Azimut entered the superyacht tri-deck segment in 2021 with the launch of its first semi-displacement 38m yacht Azimut Grande 38 Trideck named Shabby. Alongside that, Azimut is working on two new production models: the Azimut Grande 26 and Azimut Grande 36 Trideck with deliveries scheduled for 2022.
Design collaborations on models and projects
To date, Azimut has collaborated with some of the most trusted Italian designers with the aim of creating streamlined and stylish models for which Italian shipyards are reputed. One exception is the exterior design of the Azimut Magellano 25 Metri and 30 Metri, which was entrusted to British studio Ken Freivokh Design. Most of the composite-hulled production yacht models at Azimut were originally designed by Stefano Righini, who also worked on Benetti's fiberglass range.
With the development of the Grande series, Azimut began working with a new generation of Italian designers. The most recent ones, Azimut Grande 26, S10, 36 and 38 Trideck were penned by the talented Alberto Mancini who also collaborates with other prestigious Italian yacht builders. For the most recent models, the Azimut’s yacht interior was attributed to Achille Salvagni and Francesco Guida.
