The Massachusetts island, which sits south of Cape Cod, is a melting pot of farmland, lighthouses, harbor towns and golden sandy beaches. Some venture there to fish its deep Atlantic waters. Others visit for long, lingering summers, drawn by the sprawling mansions and quieter pace of life. But most are there for the sailing scene, particularly in July when the Edgartown Yacht Club Regatta provides a striking display of sailing yachts cruising the sapphire waters. A smattering of destination bars, boutiques and bistros add the finishing touch, providing culinary flare to a pristine setting whatever time of year you visit. All year-round, the cultural and historic attractions, restaurants, galleries, and one-of-a-kind boutiques will mean that you are never short of things to do here.Martha’s Vineyard’s charming villages boast strong artistic communities, seen in the architecture of the buildings and the profusion of local galleries showing and selling fabulous artwork and craft ware to take home as a memento of your time spent here. Taxis are plentiful but many choose to explore the island by bicycle or scooter. Visit the Black Dog Tavern in Tisbury for some of its famous Chowder, then head to Edgartown to admire the mansions leftover from the whaling era, and some of the island’s grand churches. For a seaside visit, Oak Bluffs offers miles of beaches, and the multicoloured ‘gingerbread’ houses on the Methodist grounds are an impressive sight. Its vibrant communities are home to artists and musicians alike, and no cultural trip to Martha’s Vineyard is complete without spending some time at the Bunch of Grapes – one of the world’s finest bookshops which can be found in the village of Tisbury. In the evenings, the sunset from your charter yacht over the pastoral landscape of the East Coast will be an unforgettable sight.
