Catamaran Yachts
Although representing only a small percentage of the superyacht fleet, multihulls – especially catamarans – have a dedicated fan base. The boats are prized for their many benefits, which include large volume, stability and often a combination of motor and sail. Both motor and sail versions are available independently, though a motor-sailer provides a good combination of the two.
Large hulls allow for spacious guest suites and extensive exterior deck spaces. Unsurprisingly, these qualities make them a popular choice for charter yachts. Catamarans offer the perfect blend of stability and volume, due to their spacious hulls, giving guests a larger yacht than the equivalent monohull. Separate hulls also allow for privacy between guests and crew, with one hull often dedicated solely to crew and operations. Typically built with a shallow draft makes them well suited to exploring shallow waters, leaving nowhere off limits. They can also command impressive speeds when compared to traditional sailing yachts.
Other multihull options include radical-looking trimarans, with Adastra by Latitude Yachts being one of the best known due to it head-turning design. Most multihull yachts are dedicated to pleasure sailing, but in the recent years some shipyards have delivered large catamaran support yachts. These large custom builds are being constructed by Astilleros Armon in Spain, Echo Yachts in Australia and Dunya Yachts in Turkey.
The best known catamaran builder is Polish shipyard Sunreef Yachts, which became a leader in large luxury catamaran yachts with its Sunreef 80 and Sunreef 100. The French shipyard JFA yachts is recognized for building custom catamarans. Two new yacht builders - Alva Yachts and Silent Yachts – recently entered the catamaran market, while in South Africa, Two Oceans Marine is the catamarans boatbuilder of choice, and Pachoud Yachts in Australia.
As a sign of catamarans’ growing popularity, some traditional monohull yacht builders have extended their production ranges to include multihulls. This is the case for Italian shipyards, Tecnomar, which has two in-build catamaran projects, and Wider with its first WiderCat 92'. The Australian luxury yacht builder Silver Yachts also followed the trend and is currently building its two first 36m catamaran motor yachts SpaceCat.
