Best time to visit: Naxos is blessed with warm, Mediterranean weather throughout the year. The hottest (and most popular) months are from May - September. 

Key cruising areas: Naxos is a sailing destination in itself with many beaches and coves to discover. Moutsouna and Panormos are beautiful bays to drop anchor and take a dip in the tranquil sea while the Port of Naxos is a safe marina to stay for a few days and explore the island by foot. Naxos is also a great starting point for a longer charter through the Cyclades and Aegean sea.

Don't miss: Grab your walking shoes and hike to the top of Mount Zas, the mountain where legend says Zeus was born and raised. Naxos is one of the best places in the Cyclades to hike and there are several ways to reach the peak of Mount Zas. Start at Aria Spring (just 30 minutes from Naxos City) where the trail is semi-paved, however the summit can be a little more strenuous. When you reach the highest point in the Cyclades, beautiful views of the island and surrounding sea await you.

Best spots for wining and dining: Giannis Taverna is a hidden gem on the island that mainly hosts locals and is known for its chicken and pork roasted over a fire. For an elegant, upscale place for dinner, Barozzi is an excellent choice.

Best local dish: Freshly caught octopus, sea bream and calamari are all local delicacies, often served in a simple white wine or lemon sauce. For a refreshing lunch, the Naxian salad is made with tomato, cucumber, pepper, onion, capers, olives, locally produced xinomizithra cheese, oregano and virgin olive oil. Make sure to enjoy the glass of local liqueur Kitron as well

Local culture: Naxos is famed for its historical monuments. For a once in a lifetime experience, visit the ancient marble gate of Portara (or Temple of Apollo) at sunset. These beautiful gates were once a majestic entrance to a temple that did not withstand the tests of time. History buffs should also make sure to visit The Temple of Demeter, the Monastery Fotodotis, and the Statues of Kouros while on the island. 

Best beach: Plaka Beach is one of the more popular spots and benefits from restaurants, bars and taverns to sample after an afternoon in the heat. The beach at Alyko cedar forest is a little off the beaten track but well worth the walk to discover these pristine sand dunes. Join the locals and try Mikri Vigla for a day of windsurfing.

IYC recommends: Chalki is a picturesque mountain village that was once the island's capital. Famous for its lush olive groves, spend the day walking through the cobblestone streets and exploring the well-preserved Venetian Towers and Byzantine churches. Don’t miss the Vallindras Kitron Distillery to learn more about the history of the island’s Kitron liqueur.
