Best time to visit: Monte Carlo has a warm, Mediterranean climate so is very pleasant from April through to October. If you wish to be in the action, the Formula One Grand Prix takes place each May or visit during September for the annual Monaco Yacht Show.

Key cruising areas: A destination in itself, you can spend several days in Monte Carlo soaking up the glamour of the yachts that float in Port Hercules, the luxury boutiques, and the dynamic food scene. If you wish to explore further, Monte Carlo is ideally situated in the heart of the Côte d'Azur so is a perfect place to embark on a charter of the French Riviera with the hotspots of Cannes, Nice, and St Tropez just a short sail away. Monte Carlo can also be the start of a longer charter along the beauty of the Italian coast or wider Mediterranean region. 

Don't miss: The infamous Monaco Yacht Club offers spectacular views of Port Hercules and the yachts lining the harbor. It’s one of the “must” spots to visit while in Monte Carlo. Of course, stopping by the celebrated Monte Carlo Casino is a very popular activity – it attracts everyone from novice gamblers to professional poker players to James Bond himself.  Even if you don’t wish to partake in a game or two, you will enjoy the grand building and ambiance of this historic venue. 

Best spots for wining and dining: There is an abundance of sophisticated restaurants to discover while in Monte Carlo. For delectable Asian-fusion experiences, Buddha-Bar offers an innovative menu within a sumptuous, buzzing environment. The world-renowned NOBU restaurant can be found at the Fairmont Hotel, as well as Saphir 24 bar – an ideal place for a nightcap with breathtaking views of the harbour below. You can enjoy champagne celebrations and spot celebrities at the Sass Cafe nightclub or enjoy a more tranquil evening drink at Le Tip Top.

Best local dish: Traditionally, the Mediterranean Sea and its proximity to France had a strong influence on the area’s cuisine but modern Monte Carlo offers visitors a plethora of international options to choose from. If you visit Old Town, you will be able to find Monégasque dishes such as Barbajuan, a baked puff pastry filled with Swiss chard, ricotta, leeks, garlic, and herbs. Another local delicacy is stuffed zucchini flowers, often served with truffles, foie gras torte, and Provençal-style artichokes. Monte Carlo also benefits from its own brewery, La Brasserie de Monaco, which pays homage to the traditional beer-making practices of the early twentieth century. 

Local culture: The culture of Monte Carlo has been heavily influenced by its proud maritime heritage and the principality’s colourful royals. Under the ruling Grimaldi family, arts and culture have flourished in Monte Carlo with many art exhibitions, operas, and ballet performances throughout the year. Although mainly known around the world for superyachts, supercars and the super-wealthy, Monte Carlo has maintained much of its authentic, Mediterranean charm. If you have time, the unique nature of this small district and its residents can be discovered on foot, so spend the day walking along the tree-lined streets, stopping in cafes, and browsing boutique art galleries. 

Best beach: Larvotto is the most famous beach in Monte Carlo itself, but there are also several lovely ones nearby. La Plage d'Eze is a pebble beach with two restaurants near the shore to enjoy lunch or drinks out of the heat. Monte Carlo’s neighbouring town Menton offers a host of sandy beaches, including the popular Baie de Garavan or Baie du Soleil. All are a short sail away by yacht or tender or can be reached by car.

IYC recommends: The Oceanographic Museum (Musée océanographique de Monaco) is a fascinating place to spend the day, particularly if there are children in your group. The beautiful museum is perched on a cliff overlooking Monte Carlo and the Mediterranean Sea and is home to a variety of exhibitions and collections. A visit here will make you appreciate the wonder of your cruising grounds even more than usual.
